The best light is always before anyone else is awake. I was on assignment for Vogue Thailand at the W Hotel on Koh Samui and found myself on the beach at first light, before the shoot began, before the crew arrived, before the day had any demands on it at all. The early sun was raking across the sand and turning it gold while the mountains across the bay still held the cool blue of the night. That contrast warm earth, cool distance is what stopped me. In an hour this beach would belong to everyone. For now, it was just mine.
