One of the easiest ways to add style and a conversation starter to any room

We have all seen the renovation shows on TV, with contestants choosing colours, textures, furnishings and decor.  However, what is often overlooked is the addition of new wall art to the space.  Adding art to a wall draws the eye, adds to the style of the room and can be a conversation starter. Without art our walls would be bare, blank and dull. So let’s look at how you can create a whole new feel to your space by including a carefully chosen piece of art.

When Selecting New Wall Art, Here Are Some Things to Consider:

There are several elements you need to take into account when choosing your next wall art print.

Colour:

The first thing to consider is colour.  Look at the colour scheme of the room, the primary and complementary colours, the accents.  This is important - not doing this can result in a beautiful piece of art that either looks garish, or makes the rest of the room look tacky.  Look at the colour palette you have to work with.  Make use of the colour wheels and charts to see what works and what doesn’t.

Subject:

The subject of the art piece is one of your next considerations.  It needs to draw the eye, but for the right reasons.  If the subject needs to work with the style and function of the room, that’s not to say it can’t be the hero in the room, but it does mean that subject selection is important.

Artist:

There will be wall art pieces that you choose because the colour and subject matter tie a room together beautifully, and that’s all that matters.  However, there will be times when the artist is also an integral part of the selection process.  Artists like David Bromley, Goompi Ugerabah or Slim Aarons, all add to the character of their art. Our Slim Aarons range, which is exclusive to FINEPRINT co in Australia and New Zealand, shows high society in the 1950s to 1970s. He is known for taking images of “attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places”. An artist can add value, not just monetarily, but also in calibre and talking points.

Style:

The style of the art is also a valuable aspect you need to consider when looking at new wall art options.  The artistic style speaks to the age of the art, the type of artist, the best position for the art. Does the room need a pop of colour in an abstract style? Or does the décor lend itself to a mid-century modern piece?  The stylistic elements of a piece can elevate a room and tie everything together.

Media Selection:

Media Selection is just industry jargon in relation to what the art is printed on.  With new wall art prints there are a number of common media options including;

  • Canvas
  • Rag paper
  • Photographic paper

Each medium brings its own quality to wall art.  When looking at a piece, this can add a dramatic sway in how it presents.  If you are unsure of the best option, don’t be afraid to ask our experts for their input. They can help determine the best option for the result you are going for.

Framing:

To frame or not to frame…it can ensure the art is the hero, or it can be a talking point in itself. Choosing the right framing can make your new piece stand out.  Here at FPC we have a variety of options, and if in doubt, it’s always best to ask our team for the best options available to you.

Shape and Size:

All of the above points talk to finding the right piece for your space.  However, selecting the right shape and size of the print now becomes just as an important consideration.  Does the wall art need to be portrait or landscape?  Is it rectangular, square or round?  What size is going to be the best fit for the space?  Too small and it loses its dominance, too large and it is overwhelming.

Measure the space where the new wall art will be positioned.  These measurements, along with the decor of the space, will help determine the best shape and size of the wall art.
